Your domain is rented, not owned forever. If the renewal is not paid in time, your website and email stop working, and after a while the name can be released for anyone to register. Here is what to expect, and how to avoid it.
The usual timeline
The exact periods and fees depend on the domain extension and its registry, but most follow this pattern:
- Expiry date: the domain stops resolving, so your website and email go offline.
- Grace period: for a limited time you can usually still renew at the normal price.
- Redemption period: for many extensions, the domain can still be recovered, but the registry charges an extra recovery fee.
- Release: the domain is deleted and becomes available to anyone, including competitors or people who buy expired names to resell.
Why it matters for a business
- Customers cannot reach your website or email you.
- Emails sent to you bounce, and you may miss orders or invoices.
- Your Google ranking can suffer while the site is offline.
- If the name is lost, rebuilding your brand on a new domain is costly.
How to protect your domain
- Keep your contact email up to date in the client area, so renewal reminders reach you.
- Renew for more than one year where the extension allows it.
- Pay renewal invoices early. It is quick with Paynow, EcoCash or bank transfer.
- Use a business email that is not on the same domain as a backup contact, so you still get reminders if the domain lapses.
- Make sure the domain is registered to your business, not a former developer or employee.
