Most people in Zimbabwe browse on their phones, often on mobile data. A slow website costs you visitors and enquiries, and Google uses page speed as one of its ranking signals. The good news: a few changes make a big difference.
Measure first
Test your home page and a key service page with Google’s free PageSpeed Insights. Look at the mobile score and the list of suggestions. Test again after each change.
1. Shrink your images
Large photos are the most common cause of slow sites. Resize images to the size they are shown, save them as WebP or compressed JPEG, and use an image optimisation plugin to compress what is already there.
2. Turn on caching
Caching saves ready-made copies of your pages so the server does not rebuild them for every visitor. Install a reputable caching plugin and enable page caching.
3. Use fewer plugins
Each plugin can add code to every page. Remove ones you do not need, and replace several small plugins with one that does the job.
4. Choose a lightweight theme
Heavy “all-in-one” themes and page builders load a lot of code. A well-built lightweight theme is faster.
5. Limit sliders, videos and pop-ups
Auto-playing sliders and embedded videos are heavy. Use one strong image and a clear headline instead, and load videos only when someone clicks play.
6. Keep PHP and WordPress updated
Newer PHP versions are noticeably faster. You can switch versions in cPanel. Test your site after changing.
7. Use a content delivery network (CDN)
A CDN keeps copies of your images, styles and scripts on servers around the world, closer to your visitors. Free plans are available from well-known providers.
8. Make sure your plan fits your traffic
If your site has grown, it may need more resources. Busy shops and business systems may be better on a VPS or cloud hosting.
