How to Move a Website to a New Host Without Losing Email

2 October 2026

WEBSITE MIGRATION

Moving a website and moving email are not automatically the same operation. The domain, website hosting, DNS and mailboxes may all be controlled by different systems, so they should be reviewed before anything changes.

Identify where every service currently lives

Before changing nameservers, record the current website host, domain registrar, DNS provider and email provider.

This matters because changing DNS without preserving the required mail records can interrupt email even when the website itself migrates correctly.

Copy the website before changing DNS

For supported migrations, website files and databases can normally be transferred to the new environment before the public domain is pointed at it.

This gives you an opportunity to verify the destination hosting before directing normal visitors there.

Preserve email records

If email remains with the existing mail provider, its MX and related DNS records may need to remain unchanged.

If email is also moving, the mailboxes and migration plan should be handled separately from the website transfer.

Verify after the change

After DNS changes, check the website from more than one network and test both incoming and outgoing email.

JomeTech provides website migration assistance for supported hosting moves.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing nameservers affect email?

It can. Nameserver changes control DNS, so existing email records must be considered before making the change.

Do I have to rebuild my website when changing hosts?

Normally no. A hosting migration transfers the existing supported website rather than rebuilding it.
