How to get your Zimbabwean business found on Google

When someone searches “printing Harare” or “plumber Bulawayo”, Google shows a map with three businesses and then a list of websites. Here is how to give your business the best chance of appearing.

1. Claim your Google Business Profile

This free listing puts your business on Google Maps and in local results.

  1. Go to Google Business Profile and add your business.
  2. Use your real business name, exact address, phone number and opening hours.
  3. Choose the most accurate main category.
  4. Verify the listing using the method Google offers.
  5. Add photos of your premises, team and work.

Keep your name, address and phone number exactly the same on your website, your profile and any directories.

2. Ask happy customers for reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they persuade new customers. Send a short WhatsApp message with your review link after each job, and reply politely to every review, including negative ones.

3. Have a proper website on your own domain

A fast, mobile-friendly website on a .co.zw domain tells Google and customers you are a real local business. Include a page for each main service, with the town or city you serve.

4. Set up Google Search Console

This free tool shows which searches bring people to your site and flags problems.

  1. Add your domain in Search Console and verify it, usually with a DNS record.
  2. Submit your sitemap. On WordPress it is usually at /wp-sitemap.xml, or the address given by your SEO plugin.
  3. Check the Pages report for errors once a month.

5. Write for real questions

Think about what customers ask you every week, and answer each question on your website or blog. Use the words customers use, including place names. One helpful article a month adds up.

6. Get mentioned elsewhere

Listings in reputable local directories, industry associations, suppliers’ websites and local news all help. Avoid buying links; it can harm your ranking.

7. Make your site fast and secure

Use HTTPS and keep pages light for mobile users. See how to make your website faster.
