How to start an online shop in Zimbabwe with WooCommerce

Selling through WhatsApp and social media works, but your own online shop lets customers browse, order and pay at any time, and builds trust. Here is a practical plan.

Step 1: Choose your domain

Pick a short, easy-to-spell name. A .co.zw shows customers you are local. See how to choose a domain name.

Step 2: Get hosting that can handle a shop

Online shops use more resources than simple sites. Start on a mid-level WordPress hosting plan, and move to a VPS as orders grow. Make sure SSL is included, because customers will enter personal details.

Step 3: Install WordPress and WooCommerce

Install WordPress from cPanel, then add the free WooCommerce plugin. Its setup wizard asks for your store address, currency and the kind of products you sell.

Step 4: Add your products well

  • Clear photos on a plain background, from several angles.
  • Honest descriptions with sizes, materials and what is included.
  • Prices in the currency your customers expect, with stock levels kept up to date.
  • Categories that match how people shop.

Step 5: Set up payments

Add Paynow so customers can pay with EcoCash, OneMoney or cards. See how to accept Paynow payments. You can also offer bank transfer and cash on delivery, and mark those orders paid when the money arrives.

Step 6: Plan delivery

Decide where you deliver, the cost and the timing, and set these up as shipping zones in WooCommerce. Offer collection if you have a shop or office.

Step 7: Write your shop policies

Publish clear pages for delivery, returns and refunds, privacy, and terms. They build trust and are often required by payment providers.

Step 8: Launch and promote

  • Place a few test orders, including a real payment.
  • Add a WhatsApp chat button for questions.
  • Share product links on your social media and WhatsApp status.
  • Set up your Google Business Profile.
